New York 4, at Baltimore 2: Jason Giambi homered and drove in two runs to back an effective pitching performance by Andy Pettitte as the Yankees averted a three-game sweep. Pettitte gave up two runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 24-6 lifetime against the Orioles, including 15-4 in Baltimore. He has more wins at Camden Yards than any visiting pitcher.

at Tampa Bay 5, Texas 3: Matt Garza (4-1) gave up two runs and four hits for the AL East leaders, who won two of three from the Rangers to hand Texas its first series loss in over a month. The Rays have won nine of their last 11 series, including six straight at home. B.J. Upton and Akinori Iwamura delivered RBI singles off Kason Gabbard (1-2), Evan Longoria had a sacrifice fly and Carlos Pena and pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd drew walks with the bases loaded for Tampa Bay, which has won 15 of 20 games.

Chicago 6, at Cleveland 5: Carlos Quentin drove in three runs, including a go-ahead, two-run double in a three-run seventh inning. Gavin Floyd (5-3) gave up two runs in the first, then retired 15 of 17 hitters before the Indians scored three times to take a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances, escaping a second-and-third, one-out jam when Ben Francisco and Victor Martinez popped out.

Toronto 2, at Oakland 1: Alex Rios hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth that helped secure the win for Roy Halladay, and the Blue Jays beat the Athletics for the first time in five tries this season. Halladay (6-5) outshined Rich Harden in an impressive pitcher’s duel between two of the American League’s top right-handers, winning his third straight decision. Halladay matched his season high with nine strikeouts, and he gave up eight hits and one run and walked one in eight strong innings. B.J. Ryan worked the ninth for his 12th save in as many tries.

at Seattle 1, Boston 0: Erik Bedard looked like the man for whom Seattle traded five players to Baltimore in February by allowing just two hits in seven innings, and Yuniesky Betancourt’s home run was all the Mariners needed to win. The Mariners had lost seven straight and 20 of 25 games before taking the last two of the three-game series against Boston.

Minnesota 9, at Kansas City 8 (10 innings): Justin Morneau hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning and the Twins, after rallying for five runs in the ninth, sent the Royals to their 10th straight loss.

Detroit 6, at Angels 2: Armando Galarraga came within two outs of his first shutout in the majors and Marcus Thames hit two homers for the Tigers.
