Coliseum may be too costly for City

Pat Lynch, general manager of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, said Thursday the City Section has been offered use of the facility rent-free for two championship football games next month, but expenses for those games must be paid for.

The cost to play the City Championship Division final on Dec. 13 would be $43,000 for one game and $57,000 for two games, Lynch said. The costs include painting the field, ticket takers, concession workers, security and sound system setup, among others.

“People want to help these guys and make it happen,” Lynch said.

But budget cuts in the City Section make it difficult for the district to come up with an extra $18,000 to make up the difference between what the City wants to pay and what the Coliseum can offer for using the facility.

“The Coliseum Commission would have to authorize going into the red,” Lynch said about accepting the City Section proposal.

Barbara Fiege, City Section commissioner, said she intends to make a final decision by today about where the football finals will be held.

If the Championship Division and City Invitational final are not held at the Coliseum, L.A. Southwest College and four high school sites are under consideration.

The Coliseum has been used for 12 years to host the final and it has played host to City title games other times in the 1970s and ‘80s.
