Taking a page from China
While walking on the Promenade in Hong Kong-Kowloon on Oct. 29, my wife and I were pleasantly surprised to see an L.A. Philharmonic concert advertised for that night. Unable to get tickets, we attended a free relay given outside on the steps of the concert hall overlooking the harbor.
The concert was projected on a large LCD screen with stereo sound system. The concert was conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 was performed by Yefim Bronfman, and was well received by the crowd. We applauded enthusiastically, knowing full well that we could not be heard by the performers.
As we watched this whole scene unfold in front of us, we wondered why similar free relays were not considered at different locations in the Los Angeles area, since we are all concerned about the demise of classical music. If we can expose some of the young people to the pleasures of classical music, it will be a great start.
