Audience builds for ‘Slumdog’

Its reviews are among the year’s best, but “Slumdog Millionaire” is now picking up something much more important -- highly positive word of mouth.

In a dramatic demonstration of how audiences are responding to director Danny Boyle’s fable about an unlikely Indian game-show contestant, “Slumdog Millionaire’s” midweek grosses are actually building, even though the film is playing in the same number of theaters.

When the movie opened Nov. 12, “Slumdog Millionaire” grossed about $33,000 in its first night, a Wednesday. But last Wednesday, the movie sold about $52,000 in tickets, an increase of nearly 60%, while still playing in the same 10 theaters in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Chicago and Washington.

Distributor Fox Searchlight will add a few more cities to “Slumdog Millionaire’s” wider release schedule this weekend, in the hopes that the buzz continues to spread across the country.
