Re “For failure to deliver, he’s his customers’ hero,” Nov. 22

I think Steven Padgett’s sentence -- a fine of $3,000, three years’ probation and 500 hours of community service -- is a miscarriage of justice. He has no right to decide for his postal customers what constitutes “junk mail.” Some of this mail represents money-saving coupons for customers. How do we know that some first-class mail was not diverted or that customers’ checks were not taken and cashed? The fact that they were not found in the stack proves nothing.

In my mind, Padgett is no hero -- just someone too lazy to do his job. The Direct Marketing Assn. should pursue him legally for its losses.
