Update -- Coach Preki’s Chivas USA finds itself in an unusual situation in today’s penultimate regular-season game. It can determine its playoff opponent depending on how it approaches the game. Chivas already is assured of finishing in second place in the West, and now it is only a matter of deciding whether it would prefer to play Real Salt Lake in the playoffs or today’s opponent, Colorado. Chivas defeated Real Salt Lake, 3-1, in April; lost to it, 1-0, in June, and defeated it again, 1-0, in Utah in September. So it has the upper hand on Real Salt Lake. But it also has the upper hand on the Rapids. Chivas won, 2-1, in Colorado in May. If Chivas beats the Rapids again today or ties them, Colorado is out of playoff contention. If Chivas loses, the battle for a playoff place between Real Salt Lake and Colorado will come down to next weekend’s regular-season finales. Chivas, on a four-game winning streak, will be going up against their former backup goalkeeper, Preston Burpo, and Colorado will come at Chivas because a tie does the Rapids no good.
