Green looks back, ahead

Broderick Green lived it, but he seemed to enjoy it even more after watching it on film two days later.

That’s how the redshirt freshman running back sounded Monday as he described viewing his 18-carry, 121-yard, two-touchdown performance against Washington State.

“It was cool to finally see myself out there in uniform and running our plays,” Green said. “I’m just like, ‘Yeah, that’s me. I’m actually running.’ Unlike last year when I had to watch.”

Green spent the weekend fielding congratulatory phone calls from family, friends and his high school coach. It made it easier to get up for classes on Monday.

“I was thinking about the game the entire time,” he said.

This week, Green is preparing for a possible role in a four-man tailback rotation against Arizona.

C.J. Gable and Stafon Johnson also rushed for more than 100 yards against Washington State. Joe McKnight, who sat out the Washington State game because of a toe injury, did a few drills Monday and told Coach Pete Carroll he would be ready to play against the Wildcats.

So the wild card might be Green.

“He’s just getting warmed up,” Carroll said. “This [was] the first chance to play with any consistency and he did a good job.”

Stepping up

Junior Nick Howell is on track to start again at right tackle after recording at least 18 knockdown blocks against Washington State.

Howell, son of former USC All-American lineman Pat Howell, recalled a poignant father-son conversation after the game.

“He said he didn’t think I made any mistakes, he knew I could do it and he knew how good I was,” Howell said. “Just hearing him say that kind of stuff was emotional for me and my dad because we were waiting for this for three years.”

Butch Lewis, who missed the game because of illness, returned to practice Monday and said he was prepared to compete to regain his spot.

Lewis lost five pounds while sick with a virus, a victory of sorts for a player who dropped 55 pounds in the summer of 2007 because of a parasite.

“Compared to that, I feel great,” he said.

Wildcats waiting

Carroll expects Arizona Stadium to be rocking when sixth-ranked USC arrives to play the Wildcats.

Coach Mike Stoops’ team is coming off a big victory over previously ranked California.

“It’s a night game again at home, here come the Trojans and the whole thing,” Carroll said. “Mike’s a fired-up coach and will have them all jacked up. . . . The stadium will be as good as it’s probably ever been, and rightfully so.”

Quick kicks

Defensive lineman Everson Griffen, linebacker Jordan Campbell, tight end Jimmy Miller, receiver Jordan Cameron and snapper Chris Pousson returned from illness and receiver Vidal Hazleton returned from a concussion. . . . McKnight wore a tinted eye shield on his helmet, a piece of equipment the NCAA allows during practices but not in games. McKnight suffered a migraine during a night game against Ohio State and has said bright stadium lights affected him. Kickoff for Saturday’s game is 7:15 p.m. . . . Cornerback Cary Harris (hamstring) did not practice but said he would attempt to today. . . . After USC committed only two penalties against Washington State, Carroll again summoned extra officials to keep the Trojans on point. . . . USC’s Nov. 1 game against Washington at the Coliseum will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally by FSN.
