Beach seals get stay of relocation
A federal judge Wednesday prohibited the city from doing anything to chase the seals off the beach at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla until he holds a hearing on the issue Nov. 25.
Seal lovers hope to convince U.S. District Judge William Hayes to allow the seals to remain. People who say the beach should be for people, not seals, are suing to force the animals’ removal.
The tangled legal matter is also set for a hearing Friday before Superior Court Judge Yuri Hofmann.
Hofmann may set a timetable for the city to remove the seals. More than 100 seals lounge on the tiny beach on sunny days.
