Streak could end for Purdue’s Painter

Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter had what Coach Joe Tiller called a slight-to-moderate right shoulder separation against Minnesota last weekend, putting his nation-leading streak of 40 consecutive starts in jeopardy heading into Saturday’s game against Michigan.

“It will be more up to the player than anyone else,” Tiller said of whether Painter will play.

“He’s the guy that knows how he feels. I trust Curtis and I think he’s honest. I think if he can go, he’ll say he can go.”

Painter and the Boilermakers, 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten Conference, still have an outside shot at a bowl bid, but Purdue has scored single-digit points in three of its last four games and failed to reach the end zone twice in that span.

Washington State freshman quarterback J.T. Levenseller will give up his redshirt season and play in his first game Saturday at Stanford, Coach Paul Wulff said. Wulff said Kevin Lopina will start at quarterback but Levenseller will play. Levenseller would be the fifth quarterback to play for the Cougars this season. . . . . Louisiana State backup quarterback Andrew Hatch is trying to recover from a leg injury and it is unclear how long he might be sidelined. . . . Marshall quarterback Mark Cann threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Thundering Herd (4-4, 3-1 Conference USA) defeated Houston, 37-23, at Huntington, W.Va. Quarterback Case Keenum completed 22 of 41 passes for 317 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for Houston (4-4, 3-1).
