The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Michael R. Dinterman, 18, of Littlestown, Pa.; private, Army. Dinterman was shot to death Sept. 6 while on foot patrol near Outpost Restrepo in Afghanistan’s Kunar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jason Richard Friewald, 30, of Armada, Mich., chief petty officer (select), Navy. Friewald died Friday of injuries suffered a day earlier while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. He was temporarily forward-deployed from his assignment at the Naval Special Warfare Development Group in Dam Neck, Va.

Nicholas A. Madrazo, 25, of Bothell, Wash.; first lieutenant, Marine Corps. Madrazo was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Afghanistan’s Parwan province. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Wayne Marcum, 34, of Flushing, Mich., senior chief petty officer, Navy. Marcum died Friday of injuries suffered a day earlier while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. He was temporarily forward-deployed from his assignment at the Naval Special Warfare Development Group in Dam Neck, Va.

Kenneth W. Mayne, 29, of Fort Benning, Ga.; sergeant, Army. Mayne was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 4 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jesse Melton III, 29, of Randallstown, Md.; captain, Marine Corps. Melton was killed Tuesday when his Humvee struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s Parwan province. He was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Jordan Thibeault, 22, of South Jordan, Utah; private, Army. Thibeault died of non-combat-related injuries Sept. 5 at Forward Operating Base Hammer in northern Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

Bryan R. Thomas, 22, of Battle Creek, Mich.; private first class, Army. Thomas was one of two soldiers killed Sept. 4 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Vincent C. Winston Jr., 22, of St. Louis; private, Army. Winston was killed Sept. 4 when his Humvee struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
