DirecTV Group Inc. was sued by customers alleging the company collected early-termination fees without their knowledge or a valid contract explaining the charges.

Consumers filed the case in Los Angeles County Superior Court, said Deanna Dailey, a lawyer representing the customers.

The suit, which seeks class-action status, alleges DirecTV improperly collected the fees when customers canceled their service, in violation of California law, according to Dailey. It seeks a refund of the fees and changes to DirecTV’s termination policy.

A spokesman for El Segundo-based DirecTV said the company hadn’t seen the lawsuit and couldn’t comment on its specific allegations.
