Re “No Place That He’d Rather Be,” by Diane Haithman, April 21: I saw a matinee performance of “The Seafarer” and I have to say that if it hadn’t been for the presence of John Mahoney, I would have left at intermission, as fully 25% of the audience did.

It was simply because of my respect for him as an actor that I stayed, on the theory that “Underneath all this . . . , there has to be a pony.” There wasn’t.
