Three people were hospitalized Saturday after being struck by windblown scaffolding at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at UCLA, the university said in a statement.
About 2:30 p.m., a gust of wind caught a festival banner and blew over a truss, causing the 15-foot-high scaffolding to fall onto three passersby at the annual book fair, said university spokesman Todd Schindler.
The victims -- a man and two women -- were taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and St. John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica for treatment.
Their identities and conditions were not released.
The area where the accident occurred, near Dickson Court on the east side of campus, was shut down briefly while paramedics treated the victims.
“There was an unfortunate accident,” Times spokeswoman Nancy Sullivan said in a written statement. “An investigation as to what happened is currently underway.”
The festival continues through today.
