Using better-than-expected jobs numbers to press his top domestic priority, President Obama argued that overhauling the nation’s costly healthcare system is essential to the country’s economic well-being.

“We’ve begun to put the brakes on this recession and . . . the worst may be behind us,” Obama said in his weekly address, citing a new Labor Department report that shows a dip in unemployment.

In the Republican response address, Bob McDonnell, the party’s nominee for Virginia governor, countered that the Labor report was “yet another reminder that families and small businesses are struggling as unemployment remains high.”
