at Boston 6, Detroit 5: Nick Green hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and one of the Red Sox’s three home runs. Boston, which ended a losing streak at six games, squandered a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning.

at Seattle 6, Chicago 4: Kenji Johjima hit his first home run since May 25, a tie-breaking two-run shot in the sixth inning. Johjima was playing on consecutive days for the first time since July 4-5 because Rob Johnson is doing most of the catching for Seattle.

Oakland 9, at Baltimore 1: Rookie Gio Gonzalez (4-2) took a five-hit shutout into the seventh inning, and Mark Ellis had a career-high five hits and four runs batted in. After giving up two hits to start the seventh, Gonzalez was pulled after a 52-minute rain delay.

at Angels 8, Tampa Bay 7: Vladimir Guerrero hit two home runs, including his 400th, and Kendry Morales also hit two home runs for the Angels.
