FER Studio’s house remodel kicks off new design showcase

To showcase the work of lesser known architecture and interior design firms in Southern California -- and to feed readers’ voracious appetites for house, condo and apartment profiles -- the Home section is launching a new blog feature called First Look. We will present new residential projects completed in the last year or so. Photos will be accompanied by explanations of the design challenges and solutions, written in the designers’ own words. Your role? You’re the critic, able to post comments and see the running conversation about the featured home.

First up: FER Studio’s remodel of George and Patty Garfield’s La Canada-Flintridge house, where the new kitchen has a raised ceiling, bifold windows opening to the backyard and an extended stainless steel counter that doubles as a bar on the other side. Look for 10 photos of the Garfields’ house on our L.A. at Home blog, latimes.com/home.
