Crafts collective

Filmmaker Faythe Levine traveled to 15 cities across America to interview 80 artists propelling the handmade crafts movement. The result, Levine’s documentary “Handmade Nation,” celebrates the current crafts explosion, as evidenced by the popularity of websites such as Etsy and craft fairs such as Renegade and Felt Club. Interviews with paper and glass artists, a feminist art collective, a “yarn-based graffiti crew” and others demonstrate how do-it-yourself is not just a trend but a way of life. The L.A. premiere, sponsored by the Silver Lake store Reform School and craft workshop Home Ec, will screen today and Sunday at the Silent Movie Theatre, 611 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles.
