Players won’t have to face Tiger Woods at Sherwood
Eighteen players will try to tune out the Tiger Woods controversy to win the $5.75-million tournament in Thousand Oaks that benefits Woods’ charity.
The four-day Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club starts today. Of the 10 previous winners, only Padraig Harrington -- who won in 2002 -- is playing in this year’s tournament, with prize money ranging from $1.35 million for the winner to $150,000 for the last-place finisher.
Woods is a four-time winner of the event but is not playing amid his personal problems. Defending winner Vijay Singh also withdrew because of a knee injury.
This year’s field includes the winners of three of the four major tournaments this year: Lucas Glover (U.S. Open), Stewart Cink (British Open) and Y.E. Yang (PGA Championship).
Jim Furyk and Los Angeles native Anthony Kim, who made strong runs in last year’s tournament, also are playing again. Other entrants include Steve Stricker, Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Kenny Perry, Camilo Villegas and former Masters champion Mike Weir.
The Sherwood Country Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is a par-72, 7,027-yard course that lies near Lake Sherwood at the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains just south of Highway 101.
