Staff And Wire Reports

The Dodgers signed utilityman Doug Mientkiewicz and shortstop Angel Berroa to minor-league contracts that include invitations to major league spring training.

First baseman John Lindsey, outfielder Prentice Redman, and pitchers Francisco Felix, Juan Perez and Josh Towers also were signed to similar deals.

Mientkiewicz made the Dodgers’ opening-day roster as a non-roster player this year, only to dislocate a shoulder two weeks into the season.

Initially told by doctors that he would be out the remainder of the year, Mientkiewicz returned in time to play 13 games in the final month of the season.

Berroa played a surprisingly significant role for the Dodgers in 2008, when he became the team’s shortstop while Rafael Furcal was sidelined by back problems.

Berroa spent most of this year in the minors, hitting .143 with no home runs and three runs batted in in 35 major league games for the New York Yankees and Mets.

Hoping they have found their setup man on the other side of the globe, the Mets have agreed to a $3-million, two-year contract with Japanese reliever Ryota Igarashi, who was 47-29 with a 3.25 earned-run average and 54 saves for the Yakult Swallows in the Japanese Central League from 1999 to 2009.

Igarashi, 30, had 630 strikeouts in 570 innings.

Orioles’ moves

Third baseman Garrett Atkins and reliever Mike Gonzalez have reached preliminary agreements with the Baltimore Orioles, people familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press.

Gonzalez gets a $12-million, two-year contract, and Atkins receives a one-year deal with an option for 2011 that guarantees him $4.5 million.
