Recruits, at ease

Share

You have got to be kidding me! Seeing a major sports network (ESPNU) dedicating nine hours to track college-bound high school football players, sitting behind long tables surrounded by an entourage of people with an exorbitant amount of microphones in front of them, is beyond ridiculous and borders on disgusting.

All this does is fuel the craziness and drama around athletes and now we support it when they are kids, yes, kids. There is no need for television networks, coaches, schools, players and especially parents to fuel this firestorm.

I would like to have ESPN also dedicate nine hours of coverage every year at the graduations of these young adults.

Pete Carroll has once again discredited the notion that a talent-laden roster will dissuade top high school recruits from choosing USC. It’s like Yogi Berra saying: “Nobody goes there anymore; it’s too crowded.”

As a Trojans fan, I’d like to congratulate The Times on the effusive coverage of UCLA’s football recruiting class. Hopefully the Bruins’ football program will start achieving the type of success currently enjoyed by the USC basketball program.

Equal ink in The Times for USC basketball would be refreshing.

I’m not surprised UCLA is starting to steal some football recruits away from USC. At UCLA the kids get to visit exciting places like Las Vegas and San Francisco during the holiday season. At USC they have to stay in town and just drive over to Pasadena for the day.

After watching Rick Neuheisel’s smarmy act all day Wednesday, I can assure you that if UCLA fans consider Pete Carroll a used car salesman, then Slick Rick is the guy selling speakers in the parking lot out of the back of his van.
