In a tentative ruling Wednesday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Helen Bendix rejected Orange County’s argument that it be allowed to roll back pensions for sheriff’s deputies.

At the same time, Bendix granted a motion filed by the Assn. of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs to dismiss the county lawsuit.

Lawyers representing the two sides will return to court Friday to continue arguments regarding the lawsuit.

The suit seeks to roll back pension plans that were approved in 2001.

Last year, county supervisors voted unanimously to initiate a lawsuit challenging the plans.

The supervisors argued that the plans violated the state’s constitutional limits on deficit spending and were a gift of public funds since the retirement benefits were granted retroactively.

Estimates have found that the county’s pension system will be underfunded by more than $2 billion over the next 30 years.
