A new international naval force under American command will soon begin patrols to confront escalating attacks by Somali pirates, the U.S. Navy said.
Pentagon officials described it as a first step to create an international structure combining military force, intelligence sharing and coordinated patrols to battle the piracy.
The more than 20 nations expected to take part in the force were not listed, but Navy officials said many would probably be countries already patrolling in the region.
