Rubio plans to part ways to Spanish club

Ricky Rubio plans to part ways with Spanish basketball club DKV Joventut even if the Minnesota Timberwolves cannot reach a deal to bring their first-round draft pick to the NBA.

Timberwolves President David Kahn was in Spain this week to try and help the fifth overall pick negotiate a buyout of his contract with Joventut. Rubio is at odds with his boyhood club over a buyout clause that could cost the 18-year-old point guard as much as $6.6 million. The NBA’s collective bargaining rules limit the Timberwolves’ contribution to $500,000.

Regardless of whether Rubio makes the trip across the Atlantic next season, he won’t be playing at Joventut.

“I want to continue with the club but, after everything that’s happened, I don’t think they’re too comfortable having me in their squad,” Rubio said.

The Indiana Pacers announced that they waived point guard Jamaal Tinsley, and a team spokesman said the NBA will process the request today. If he clears waivers in seven days, he will become a free agent. If Tinsley clears waivers, none of the players who have had legal problems or were involved in the brawl between Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans in 2004 will remain on the roster.

The Pistons have signed free-agent forward Chris Wilcox to a multiyear contract. The 26-year-old has appeared in 448 NBA games since the Clippers drafted him eighth overall in 2002. . . . Reserve Jamaal Magloire has re-signed with the Miami Heat, giving the team four centers under contract.

The Denver Nuggets will play an exhibition Oct. 11 against the Pacers in Beijing, the second time they will meet in Asia.

No criminal look at Roethlisberger

Law enforcement officials in Nevada have no intention of opening a criminal investigation into claims a woman made in a civil lawsuit that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her at a Lake Tahoe hotel-casino a year ago, the sheriff’s department said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Teresa Duffy said the accuser would have to file a criminal complaint to trigger an investigation into the incident the woman says occurred during a celebrity golf tournament last July while she was working as an executive VIP casino host at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

The son of Dodgers batting coach Don Mattingly, who played for the New York Yankees, was arraigned in Indianapolis on misdemeanor charges of shoving his mother and spitting in her face after she allegedly sent him an insulting text message.

The case against Taylor Mattingly, 24, was deferred so he can apply for a pretrial diversion program, said Angela Watson, director of the program for the Vanderburgh County prosecutor’s office.

A Philadelphia man who says he was shot by NFL receiver Marvin Harrison last year remains in critical condition after being shot again. Dwight Dixon was found shot multiple times in Philadelphia’s Fairmount section late Tuesday morning.

A judge says he’ll rule by Aug. 7 whether to put on hold a lawsuit by Minnesota Vikings Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, who are fighting their pending suspensions for violating the NFL’s anti-doping policy.

Positive test for MMA’s Barnett

Former mixed martial arts heavyweight champion Josh Barnett tested positive for steroids and was scrapped from the main event of the “Affliction: Trilogy” show, less than two weeks before he was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko in Anaheim.
