A 29-year-old man was in critical condition late Sunday after being shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on a freeway onramp in Long Beach, authorities said.

Two deputies from the gang enforcement unit were traveling north on Long Beach Boulevard about 8 p.m. Saturday when they encountered Rashad Bolling, who they believed was carrying a weapon, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department.

The deputies chased Bolling on foot onto the Artesia Boulevard onramp to the westbound 91 Freeway when Bolling turned and pointed a handgun at them, the statement said. Bolling was shot and taken to a hospital. Neither deputy was injured.
