‘The Red Shoes’

You’ve read about it, heard about it, maybe even dreamed about it. The UCLA Film & Television Archive restoration of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s much-beloved 1948 “The Red Shoes,” a sensation at Cannes, is having its North American debut at the Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater in Westwood. The UCLA restoration does full justice to one of the most exquisite color films ever made. Jack Cardiff’s gorgeous three-strip Technicolor cinematography creates the kind of deep, vivid hues that will leave viewers literally gasping. Screenings are Friday at 7:30 (with UCLA’s preservation officer Robert Gitt introducing the film), Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. A rare chance to see this on the big screen where it belongs.
