Henry Miller and vampires

As lead singer of the alt-rock band Incubus, Brandon Boyd is at ease in a stadium full of screaming fans or painting alone in his kitchen.

In between recording albums and touring, the Calabasas native has published two art books full of his sketches, paintings, poems, musings and other work. Last fall, his first solo exhibition, “Ectoplasm,” was at Mr. Musichead Gallery in L.A. And after Incubus returns from its latest tour, kicking off July 9 in San Diego and coming to the Hollywood Bowl on July 13, Boyd plans to focus on a new set of paintings.

Meanwhile, some art is always close at hand: His left arm sports a tattoo -- a slightly altered version of “The Peacock Skirt” by 19th century artist Aubrey Beardsley.

He recently spoke with Liesl Bradner about his pop culture favorites.

HEAVY ROTATION ON YOUR IPOD:

I’m really fascinated by Antony and the Johnsons’ “I’m Your Man” with Leonard Cohen. When I really love someone’s voice, I listen on vinyl -- the true way to hear.

SOUNDTRACK FOR YOUR COMMUTE:

I usually listen to NPR. There are wonderful, crazy and scary things happening in the world, and KCRW is a nice window into it. Or I’ll listen to demos -- random guitar riffs -- and listen to them ad nauseam. That’s how I write songs.

TV PICKS:

When I do watch TV, it’s before bed, so it’s usually Adult Swim. It’s very funny and plays into my exact sense of humor. I like “Family Guy” and “Venture Brothers.” I’m a big fan of adult animation.

IN YOUR NETFLIX QUEUE:

I just received “Let the Right One In.” It’s the best vampire movie I’ve seen. It’s a different take on the horror genre, very subtle and completely fresh.

ON THE BEDSTAND:

I’m three-quarters of the way through “Sexus” by Henry Miller; the Rosy Crucifixion series is fascinating. I’ve been devouring his work the past few years.
