Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) told hundreds of supporters at a black church in Chicago that he had been working hard to represent them in Washington.

Burris, who spoke at New Covenant Baptist Church, didn’t mention the calls for his resignation, including from Gov. Patrick Quinn.

Instead, he pointed to his accomplishments, including voting for President Obama’s economic stimulus bill. And he said he proposed legislation to recognize the slaves who built the Capitol.

Burris has been under fire for the circumstances of his elevation to the Senate -- he was appointed by former Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich, who has since been impeached, convicted and removed from office -- and for changing his story about it.

Blagojevich also faces federal corruption charges.
