Blake DeWitt leads Dodgers over Padres
Blake DeWitt hit a home run and a double and the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres, 5-4, on Tuesday at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Chad Billingsley, a candidate to start opening day, threw two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one.
Shawn Estes, who is vying to be the Dodgers’ fifth starter, also tossed a pair of scoreless innings. Estes was shelled in his previous start, giving up seven runs -- five earned -- in 1 1/3 innings.
The Dodgers went ahead in the second inning on career minor leaguer Mitch Jones’ Cactus League-leading third home run. DeWitt hit a two-run shot in the sixth.
DeWitt played five errorless innings at shortstop but bobbled a potential double-play ball in the fifth that ended up costing the Dodgers a run.
Injury update
Middle infield prospect Ivan DeJesus Jr. will undergo surgery on his left leg, which was broken in a “B” game Monday. DeJesus is expected be sidelined for at least four months, trainer Stan Conte said.
Infielder Tony Abreu underwent an MRI exam on his injured right groin that came back negative. He got in a light workout.
