A strong, cold area of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska was expected to drop into the region overnight and throughout today.

The potent storm was expected to bring much colder temperatures, periods of rain, isolated thunderstorms and the potential for damaging winds.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch effective today for the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Wind gusts of more than 60 mph could combine with snow and fog to make driving treacherous.

Snow levels could drop to 3,000 feet, with 3 to 5 inches possible. Travelers late today along Interstates 5 and 15 should be aware of the potential for hazardous driving conditions, officials said.

Additionally, a high-wind watch was issued for the high desert, including the Antelope Valley, Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley; the mountains of Riverside and San Bernardino counties; and the Coachella Valley.
