Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday approved a reward in the little-watched case of a man killed last month by a hit-and-run motorist.
Villaraigosa signed off on the $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing of Agapito Gaspar Nicolas on the same day that an article in The Times examined how little attention the media, police and politicians have given Nicolas’ case compared with a similar hit-and-run that killed a USC student the same day.
After approval late last month by the City Council, the paperwork for the reward sat in Villaraigosa’s office for a week awaiting his signature. The council did not act on the matter until nearly a month after Agapito was killed.
