Rockets and machine-gun fire buffeted a government motorcade in an apparent assassination attempt on the Afghan leader’s brother. A bodyguard was killed, said Ahmad Wali Karzai, younger brother of President Hamid Karzai.

It was the second apparent attempt on Wali Karzai’s life in less than two months, underscoring the threat even the most well-guarded here face.

Wali Karzai said his convoy was returning to Kabul when gunmen attacked them in Surobi, about 25 miles from the capital. He was not harmed.
