WORLD BRIEFING / MYANMAR

Times Wire Reports

The court trying Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi for violating the terms of her house arrest disqualified all but one witness in her defense, making it likely that the proceedings will finish this week, one of her lawyers said.

The American whose uninvited visit to Suu Kyi’s home triggered the case against her testified that he was “sent by God” to make his nighttime swim to sneak into her compound this month, according to lawyer Nyan Win.

Suu Kyi, 63, is accused of violating the terms of her house arrest by sheltering the visitor, John William Yettaw of Falcon, Mo. If convicted, she could be sentenced to five years in prison. Myanmar’s courts operate under the influence of the military and almost always deal harshly with political dissidents.
