Stephen Belber, in his indecipherable essay on writing for theater (“A Place for Characters to Evolve,” May 24), avers that an audience can be held spellbound watching two characters talking about the death penalty for three hours. He is also attempting to use the descriptive word “sucky” as a measure of whether a play is worth staging.

He then sees himself as Sisyphus, pushing the boulder uphill, and never quite getting there, so what the hell, we’ll do it for film instead. One is forced to conclude that Belber is pushing a boulder full of ideas that suck, ideas that should fall to the bottom of a very deep heap.
