THE WORLD : 8 dead in Pakistan suicide blast
A suspected car bomb blast rocked the regional headquarters of Pakistan’s intelligence agency today in this violence-wracked northwestern city, killing at least eight people and injuring at least 40.
Pakistani intelligence sources said that a vehicle resembling an ambulance struck the Inter-Services Intelligence agency office on Khyber Road just before sunrise. Sources said that the building collapsed. Thick gray smoke billowed into the sky after the explosion. Pakistani troops sealed off the area.
Peshawar police official Sahibzada Muhammad Anees said that five bodies and 30 wounded people had been taken to Lady Reading Hospital, though he did not give details about the explosion. Doctors said the hospital’s morgue had received eight bodies.
Sources said 20 wounded soldiers were rushed to the Combined Military Hospital.
“I thought an earthquake hit the city when the explosion occurred. I cannot believe it was a bomb,” said a Peshawar doctor who lives near the ISI office.
