For comic Stephen Colbert, it’s cool runnings with the bobsled team

In what he described as the “ride of his life,” comedian Stephen Colbert made a bobsled run Sunday with Team USA in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Apparently, it was with big aspirations in mind.

“I can’t wait to go to Vancouver to compete with the Olympic team,” Colbert joked with reporters. “Evidently, I’m very good having weight and allowing gravity to weigh the sled down.”

Colbert’s interest in the 2010 Olympic Games has evolved from recently sponsoring the U.S. Olympic speedskating team to riding with the bobsled team Sunday after it competed in the skeleton World Cup.

Colbert, who hosts Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” and who always has something to say, acknowledged the ride left him breathless.

“It felt like I was being hit in the head with ice hammers,” he said. “It was like losing the worst snowball fight of your life.”

Eggs in the wrong basket

The jury is still out on whether New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson knowingly shot a three-pointer at the wrong basket in Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Nets.

But Robinson told reporters he didn’t have a lapse in judgment. His three-pointer in the first quarter didn’t count because it went in the Nets’ basket after time had expired.

“It wasn’t like I was trying to make it, like seriously,” Robinson said. “It was just a shot. I waited until the buzzer went off.”

That didn’t stop Knicks Coach Mike D’Antoni from berating him on the sidelines. Robinson sat out the second half, a move D’Antoni said a day later had nothing to do with Robinson’s heave.

Nonetheless, D’Antoni was still upset: “When you’re 2-9, which we were at the time, I think any distractions are bad.”

Flavor of the month

With snowboarder Hannah Teter the first athlete to have a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor named after her, the Rutland (Vt.) Herald newspaper called it a “match made in maple heaven.”

The flavor, “Maple Blondie,” features ice cream with blond brownie pieces and a maple caramel swirl. It will be released at the end of November.

“Hannah Teter fits the profile perfectly,” wrote Cristina Kumka of the Herald. “She’s blond and in more ways than one symbolizes maple syrup through her Hannah’s Gold charity and her Vermont origins.”
