Mississippi struggles in win against Memphis

Jevan Snead recovered from a poor start to throw for two touchdowns and Dexter McCluster scored twice to lead No. 8 Mississippi to a 45-14 win over host Memphis on Sunday.

Snead struggled for three quarters before breaking open a close game with scoring passes of 17 and 18 yards to McCluster and Markeith Summers.

Brandon Bolden rushed for 71 yards in nine carries, scored one touchdown and set up another with a 28-yard run.

It was the seventh straight win for the Rebels (1-0).

Curtis Steele’s two rushing touchdowns kept Memphis (0-1) in it, but Fon Ingram’s 35-yard interception return for a touchdown for Ole Miss just before halftime kept the Tigers at bay.

Colorado State wins

Senior Grant Stucker, in his first collegiate start, threw a touchdown and led Colorado State on five scoring drives in the Rams’ 23-17 upset of Colorado in Boulder.

Blount apologizes

Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount called Boise State defensive end Byron Hout and Coach Chris Petersen to apologize for the punch he threw after Thursday’s game between the teams.

Blount, who has been suspended for the season, and Ducks Coach Chip Kelly made the conciliatory phone call Saturday.

A spokesman for Oregon confirmed it took place but would not discuss what was said.

Saturday’s apology was first reported by the Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene, Ore., and ESPN.

Sooners must wait

A day after Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford was knocked out of Oklahoma’s opener because of a shoulder injury, Oklahoma’s coaching staff was still awaiting word on when the quarterback would be able to play again.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said the Sooners’ medical staff was gathering information to determine what treatment options were available, and how long Bradford would be out. Bradford was hurt just before halftime in a 14-13 loss to Brigham Young.
