Update: Unexpectedly finding itself in danger of missing the playoffs after its best-ever start to an MLS season, Chivas USA bolstered its roster Friday by acquiring the rights to goalkeeper Jon Conway from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2011. That move came shortly after Chivas traded defender Bobby Burling to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2010 MLS draft. Chivas has been shut out in five of its last seven games and needs to win today to avoid falling behind New England in the playoff race. The teams both have 33 points and a half-share of the eighth and final playoff place. The Revolution holds the tiebreaker. Forward Maykel Galindo and midfielder Marcelo Saragosa will serve one-game suspensions today, as will Revolution playmaker Shalrie Joseph. New England, which defeated Chivas, 2-0, at Foxborough, Mass., in July, has won three of its last four games and is only six points behind the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew. Chivas USA is in fifth place in the Western Conference but has at least two games in hand on all the teams ahead of it. Forward Jorge Flores and midfielder Gerson Mayen will leave Monday to join the U.S. Under-20 national team that will take part in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt later this month.
