No good reason not to talk about: “The Invention of Lying”

As evidenced during last Sunday’s Emmys, Ricky Gervais can perk up any boorish affair. Written and directed by the star of the original “Office,” the comedy is set in an alternate reality where no one has ever lied -- until one man decides to tell the first fib. More reasons to talk: Gervais’ costars include funny people Tina Fey and Jonah Hill. (Friday)

Why would you not talk about: “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2”

“Toy Story 3” doesn’t come out until next summer. Fortunately, the benevolent gods at Disney are giving us something to tide us over until then: “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” back in theaters and this time in 3-D. (Friday)

I’ll be talking about: “Juliet, Naked: a novel”

Fall makes me mopey and shmoopy at the same time. Nick Hornby’s latest sounds like perfect seasonal reading material: A lonely but restless woman strikes up an e-mail correspondence with a washed-up singer-songwriter -- and, wait for it, single dad! -- looking for a comeback. Will they make beautiful music together? Can’t wait. (Tuesday)

Should you talk about: Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”?

Another winning album title, yes. But her latest was originally set for an August release, and her first single -- the Eminem-inspired “Obsessed” -- was meh (not to mention the rare Mariah song that didn’t break Billboard’s Top 10). Single No. 2 doesn’t fare much better: a thin cover of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” Mariah actually gives her performance of the year in the movie “Precious,” in theaters Nov. 7.

If you’re still going to talk about: “The Hills” . . .

Now’s the time. The new season of MTV’s reality hit is getting revamped thanks to its new star, villainess Kristen Cavallari. Her diabolical laugh, willingness to make out with Justin Bobby and share screen time with Spencer and Heidi, who want to get pregnant this season -- it could revive the franchise or hammer the final nail in its coffin. Going to talk about: “More Than a Game”?

The documentary chronicles the seven-year journey of five young basketball players from Akron, Ohio. They’re coached by one of their dads and led by LeBron “The Chosen One” James, whose own exploding celebrity once threatened to destroy the team. (Friday)
