Re “Terror probe widens in U.S.,” and “Obama is reviewing war strategy,” Sept. 22

Isn’t it fascinating?

The Times reports that the president considers ending an expensive mission in Afghanistan because of “a grim assessment ... from his top commander” and opposition from leading Democrats.

Suddenly there is a “news leak” that federal authorities have found a dozen new Afghan and Islamic terrorists hiding in New York and the vicinity.

As usual, an unnamed “federal law enforcement official ... speaking on condition of anonymity” can only reveal the suspect’s names, occupations and the intended targets to the national media and TV stations.

My dad once said that every time Congress was called to vote on a new defense bill, a Soviet warship would suddenly appear on the horizon.

I guess nothing has changed.
