Miguel Batista of the Nationals was booed when he started Tuesday as a last-minute replacement for the wondrous Stephen Strasburg, who went on the disabled list because of shoulder inflammation. “Imagine if you go to see Miss Universe, then you end up having Miss Iowa,” Batista said. “You might get those kind of boos.” Batista meant no harm, and the next day he sent flowers to Miss Iowa, Katherine Connors. Yet the quip took on such a life of its own that Connors flew to Washington to throw out the first pitch Friday — with Batista catching.
