Wild Horse Sanctuary Open House
When, where: Aug. 21, Wild Horse Sanctuary
Highlights: This annual Shasta County event, hosted by a nonprofit, includes opportunities to ride horses (free for children 10 and younger), see wild mustangs and burros and learn about horseshoeing, grooming and saddling. Also cowboy poetry, live music, a barn dance and plenty of food.

Wooden Boat Festival
When, where: Aug. 26-29, Granville Island
Highlights: Wooden boats are the focus of this annual event, either afloat as exhibitions or in a variety of races. On shore, enjoy music, take in a demonstration or participate in boat building.
Earthquake Street Festival
When, where: Aug. 27, downtown Winters
Highlights: This Yolo County celebration commemorates the town’s rebuilding, after an 1892 earthquake, with dancing, a farmers market and live music.

Bodega Seafood, Art & Wine Festival
When, where: Aug. 28 and 29, Watts Ranch
Highlights: Culinary highlights at this Sonoma County get-together come from some 30 wineries, 15 microbreweries and 15 restaurants. The event also features live music, an animal show, a rubber-duck race and craftspeople selling their works.
