Update: If the Galaxy’s confidence was turning into arrogance after the team won 14 of its first 19 games this season and lost only once, that is no longer the case. Coach Bruce Arena’s squad appears as vulnerable as any in MLS. It has lost six of its last 10 games in all competitions and has been eliminated from both the U.S. Open Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League. Even though the Galaxy is still in first place overall in the MLS standings and virtually assured of a playoff spot, the team has not won back-to-back games in the league since June 5. Arena needs to turn around the players’ minds in the last nine games of the regular season if the Galaxy wants to make a serious run at the Nov. 21 MLS Cup in Toronto. Last weekend’s 1-0 loss at San Jose showed woeful offense and shambolic defending. Only hapless and last-place D.C. United has scored fewer goals than Kansas City, so perhaps the Galaxy turnaround will begin Saturday night.
