Bode Miller must wait as men’s super combined is postponed

Bode Miller’s chance for a second medal in Whistler will have to wait.

The Olympic Alpine schedule got scrambled again Tuesday when an early morning storm forced the postponement of the men’s super combined.

The good news is that better weather is expected in Whistler for the next several days.

The latest reset of Alpine events: the men’s combined will be moved to Sunday, with the giant slalom getting bumped to next Tuesday, an open date on the schedule.

The men’s super giant slalom will remain in its original Friday spot.

The women’s downhill, which will mark Lindsey Vonn’s long-awaited debut at these Games, is still scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The women’s super combined, originally scheduled for Sunday, will now be raced Thursday. All the weather-related postponements mean there will be Alpine medal events nine of the next 10 days, the lone off day being next Monday.

The only Olympic Alpine event raced so far has been the men’s downhill, postponed by two days, on Monday. Miller, who did not medal in five tries four years ago in Turin, claimed a bronze in his first medal chance by finishing third. Miller missed a gold medal by .09 of a second, finishing behind winner Didier Defago of Switzerland and silver medalist Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway.

Miller should be a solid contender in Friday’s super G and Sunday’s combined. Miller was leading the combined in Sestriere by .97 of a second before he straddled a gate in the slalom, allowing teammate Ted Ligety to win.

The combined format has been changed for these Olympics, with the downhill combined featuring only one run of slalom, instead of two.

This should help Miller, who has a history of being unable to finish two-run gate races.

“You can always count on me making mistakes and pushing hard,” Miller said.

Miller won a super combined event last month in Wengen, Switzerland, his 32nd World Cup victory.
