Made in California: Outdoor dining with style

Share

Frustrated that they didn’t have enough interior space to host proper dinner parties, Scout Regalia co-founders Benjamin Luddy and Makoto Mizutani created an outdoor table set made of responsibly harvested redwood and colorful enameled aluminum.

“We work out of our apartment in Echo Park,” Mizutani says. “It’s nice to be able to have 10 people over for dinner and not feel crammed inside the house.”

Each set is made to order, with the aluminum available in 210 colors. The table, 75 inches long, comes with two benches. Total price: $1,800 with untreated wood that ages to a naturally rich patina, $2,100 for a clear coat seal.

The firm also sells a raised flower bed designed with apartment dwellers and small-space gardeners in mind. The 18-by-30-inch box can easily fit on a small patio or balcony. Like the table, the garden box is made with Forest Stewardship Council-certified redwood, and it’s lined with a drainage textile made of 40% post-industrial recycled material.

The box comes fully assembled for $185 or as a DIY kit for $95. The kit includes powder-coated heavy-gauge steel brackets and related hardware, the drainage textile and instructions (but no wood). Plants and soil are not included either.
