Joe Sib keeps it low-key, kid-friendly

Share

Joe Sib lives in a lovely 1927 Spanish-style house in Glendale with wife Karen and their two kids. Who’d figure that inside Joe beats the heart of a punk?

The onetime sporter of a multicolored mohawk, Sib is co-owner of SideOneDummy Records, fronts the band Wax and hosts the “Complete Control” radio show Saturday nights from 10 till midnight on KYSR-FM (98.7), spinning the best in old and new punk rock.

He’ll be returning to Largo at the Coronet on March 10 with “ California Calling,” a personal story of growing up punk in the Golden State, with guest star Audra Mae.

Meanwhile, here’s a story about his weekends.

Family friendly

On a Friday night, we’ll head over to our favorite Mexican restaurant, La Cabañita in Glendale. People come from all over L.A. to eat at this family-owned place. Why? Everything’s freshly made, they have a nice vegetarian section of their menu, and the food’s just great. I’ll start out with a margarita on the rocks with salt and my wife and I will split the vegetarian nachos and chiles rellenos.

All in all, it’s got a cool vibe that’s good for families.

Loves it local

On Saturday morning, the first thing to do is hit a jog through our great old neighborhood. I can get in three or four miles and not even realize it because it’s that beautiful. Karen will bust out some yoga. And then we’ll take the kids skating at Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale. You get there early and it’s free skate, it’s affordable, and it’s so fun.

After that, it’s the Taco Spot in Eagle Rock. This is more of a fast-foodie place, but it’s great. Before I stopped eating meat, I used to get this great dish they have -- French fries with cheese, onions and carne asada over the top. Now I just get it without the meat. Still great.

Date night, or . . .

In the evening, Karen and I might need some time alone, and one of our favorite places is Cliff’s Edge on Sunset. Love that restaurant, first of all because of the atmosphere and second because of the staff. You roll in there and they take care of you. It’s a home run, and eating under that huge, beautiful tree is fantastic. And the food is amazing -- the beet salad, garlic fries, vegetarian soup -- all awesome.

If it’s a night where we can’t get a sitter, we’ll all go to Jewel City Bowl in Glendale. It’s really clean, kid-friendly, but it’s still a bowling alley and you can get beer and killer pizza. And then later in the evening they turn off all the regular lights and turn on the black lights and play ‘70s and ‘80s music, and the kids are dancing and everyone is hanging out having a good time.

But by 10 p.m., I’ve got to get over to the radio station and start playing some great punk rock.

Any board will do

On Sunday, I’ll get up at the crack of dawn and catch a wave out at County Line, right next to Neptune’s Net. If I can’t get out there, I’ll go to Glendale Verdugo Skatepark. I always end up skating with some of the guys I grew up with in the ‘80s.

Then I’ll go grab the family and we’ll head up to Montrose farmers market. They have an amazing hummus stand, and we’ll buy all our produce and bread for the week. Everything’s organic, although sometimes I’ll ask if there’s anything with chemicals just so I can keep it real. Then we’ll take it home and give everyone a job in making up a nice vegetarian pasta sauce over some penne for Sunday dinner.

And fortunately, I live only a few blocks away from Red Carpet, which is the premier wine store in the area. All you do is walk in, tell them the occasion, and you’ll walk out with the perfect bottle. Those guys can make an idiot like me feel like a wine connoisseur.
