Summer Darling The first act to release a physical full-length on the in-house label of beloved Echo Park hipster Origami Vinyl, the band earns its comparisons to the fringier elements of Neil Young and such thoughtful ‘90s punk as Fugazi and Shudder to Think. Kings of Leon The scruffy Southern rockers were on no one’s short list to become the dominant voice of guitar-based music in 2010. Yet here we are, with the quartet ruling the charts and minds of pop radio and frat bro-downs alike. Mississippi Man The blues and folk-infused five-piece from Orange County, which draws influences that range from the Beatles to Jack Kerouac, continues its July residency at the Echo. A Voyage of Growth and Discovery Baby Ikki, the enigmatic, diaper-clad alter ego of artist Michael Smith (age 59), would look out of place almost anywhere — except at Burning Man, the psychedelic summer festival held in the Nevada desert. Amid the spectacle, Ikki’s adventures at Burning Man, captured in this 90-minute film by Smith and collaborator Mike Kelley, manage to be adroit and thought-provoking.
