Matt Bettencourt wins by one at Reno-Tahoe Open

Matt Bettencourt chipped in for an eagle on the 11th hole, then held off Bob Heintz by a stroke to win for the first time on the PGA Tour at the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Bettencourt’s four-under-par 68 ended with a bogey on No. 18 after a birdie on No. 17, finishing at 11-under 277 Sunday.

Heintz (69) missed a three-foot birdie putt on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff.

John Merrick and Mathias Gronberg each shot 69 and tied for third at nine under.

Tommy Gainey shot a three-under 69 to become the Nationwide Tour’s first two-time winner this season, holding on for a three-stroke victory in the Chiquita Classic at Maineville, Ohio.

Gainey had matched the course record at TPC River Bend with a 62 in the third round.

Power gets victory in Toronto

Will Power won the Honda Indy Toronto race for his second consecutive victory and fourth of the season, passing Justin Wilson off a restart with 14 laps left and holding off Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti.

Power finished 1.2757 seconds ahead of Franchitti.

Ron Capps won in funny car at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Capps, who posted his first victory of the season, was joined in the winner’s circle by Larry Dixon (top fuel), Jeg Coughlin (pro stock), and Michael Phillips (pro stock motorcycle).

Almagro defeats Soderling

Fourth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat defending champion Robin Soderling in three sets to win the clay-court Swedish Open final at Bastad and claim his first tennis title of the year.

The 20th-ranked Almagro outplayed his Swedish opponent in the deciding set to win the match, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, in a little less than two hours.

Albert Montanes of Spain collected his second ATP title of the season after Gael Monfils retired from the Mercedes Cup final in Stuttgart, Germany, because of an ankle injury.

The fifth-seeded Montanes was leading, 6-2, 1-2, when the third-seeded Frenchman withdrew. Monfils turned his right ankle late in the first set.

Fifth-seeded Kaia Kanepi defeated defending champion Flavia Pennetta, 6-4, 6-3, in the final of the Palermo Open in Italy.

Marlang led from gate to wire in the $100,000 Sunset Handicap, the closing-day feature at Hollywood Park.

Marlang and Joel Rosario, who was the leading rider for the third consecutive Hollywood meeting, beat Champ Pegasus by one length in the Grade III Sunset.

Doug O’Neill saddled 28 winners to become the meet’s leading trainer despite a 15-day suspension that ended Saturday. Bob Baffert was second with 27 victories.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of Santa Ana Mater Dei scored 21 points to lead the United States to a 114-57 victory over Canada in the women’s basketball U17 World Championships at Rodez, France.

The U.S. plays Turkey on Tuesday and Japan on Wednesday in its final two games of the preliminary round.
