Justin Rose shot an eight-under-par 62 in the second round of the Travelers Championship, birdieing five consecutive back-nine holes to take a four-stroke lead over Kevin Sutherland at Cromwell, Conn.

Rose broke the tournament record for the first 36 holes, finishing at 14-under 126. The 62 was one off the course record at TPC River Highlands.

Sutherland shot his second consecutive 65.

Cristie Kerr shot a six-under 66 to take a five-stroke lead in the LPGA Championship, the tour’s second major of the season.

Relying on her chipping and near-perfect putting, Kerr had a 10-under 134 total on the Locust Hill Country Club course at Pittsford, N.Y.

Inbee Park, the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open champion, and Mika Miyazato were tied for second at five under after each shooting 70s.

Mark Calcavecchia probably won’t forget his first round on the Champions Tour.

A bundle of nerves at the first hole in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, Calcavecchia settled down and shot a five-under 67 and was only two shots behind leader Wayne Levi at Endicott, N.Y.

Levi shot a seven-under 65 and had a one-shot lead over Brad Bryant and Dan Forsman.

Cubs suspend Zambrano

Carlos Zambrano was suspended indefinitely by the Chicago Cubs for his tantrum and dugout altercation with teammate Derrek Lee after the first inning of a 6-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

General Manager Jim Hendry said Zambrano’s behavior was “not acceptable” and sounded as if he had lost patience with the volatile pitcher.

Asked if there was any doubt in his mind that Zambrano would pitch again for the Cubs this year, Hendry said he “certainly wouldn’t rule it out.”
