HAITI

Lend a helping hand

If you want to help ease some of the pain caused by the January earthquake in Haiti, here’s an opportunity: In this package, you’ll travel to the Caribbean country and help construct a computer classroom for a school in Jacmel and part of a home for orphaned boys in Port-au-Prince. The volunteer work is physically demanding, but you get time off to tour Jacmel, an art-filled port town; to travel to Bassin-Bleu, a series of waterfalls and basins; to play with children and join their folkloric dance classes; to visit the azure waters of Ti Mouillage beach; and to browse Croix-des-Bouquets, a village with a population of metalworking artisans.

Itinerary: Port-au-Prince to Jacmel and back

Dates: Aug. 15-29 or Nov. 21-Dec. 5

Price: The basic package is $500 and includes a stay in tents or on floor pads, and includes breakfasts and lunches. An upgraded version costs $1,500 and includes hotel accommodations and all meals. Both packages include transportation, a volunteer orientation and training, sightseeing activities and a 5% donation to local causes. Airfare is not included.

A highlight show

This 12-day “Magical China & Yangtze River” itinerary hits many of China’s highlights, including the Great Wall, the Three Gorges Dam, Tiananmen Square, Xian’s terra-cotta warriors and the giant pandas at Chongqing Zoo. PERU

Nature and culture

The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Assn., with Classic Escapes (www.classicescapes.com), is offering a wildlife- and culture-filled journey, the 16-day “Classic Adventure to Peru,” that includes time in bustling cities, along the coast and on the Amazon River. Start with a tour of Lima that visits the Plaza de Armas, the Archaeological Museum and dinner in a pre-Columbian temple. Then fly over the 2,000-year-old Nazca Lines, visible only from above, and forge into Paracas National Reserve, a marine-conservation center where whales, otters and penguins thrive. A boat trip to the Ballestas Islands yields yet more marine-life sightings before a boarding of the M/V Delfin II for a five-day Amazon River cruise through the world’s largest protected wetland, the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. An array of bird species as well as exotic fish, pink river dolphins and red howler monkeys will all be on view as nature-expert guides proffer their knowledge. During stops at indigenous villages, locals share traditions, rituals and folklore.

Learning legends
