Angels have 15 hits in win over Brewers

Angels 10, Milwaukee Brewers 5

AT THE PLATE: The Angels scored four times before Milwaukee starter Jeff Suppan managed to get an out, with two of those runs coming on Bobby Abreu’s opposite-field home run. Kendry Morales had a mammoth home run to right leading off the fifth, and outfielder Peter Bourjos added a two-run homer of his own an inning later. Morales finished with two hits and a walk, scoring twice, while Torii Hunter and non-roster infielder Gary Patchett contributed two hits apiece to the Angels’ 15-hit attack.

ON THE MOUND: Free-agent acquisition Joel Pineiro looked sharp in his four-inning, 64-pitch outing, retiring the first seven batters in order despite a scary collision with Brewers baserunner Jim Edmonds in the first. Edmonds ran over the pitcher when Pineiro tried to tag him after fielding Edmonds’ squibber up the first-base line. “It was just an unfortunate accident, but any time any player goes down or lands awkward like that you’re worried about it,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said. Both Edmonds and Pineiro, who was sporting a bruise under his right eye, said the contact was unintentional.

EXTRA BASES: Closer Brian Fuentes continues to have success with his off-speed pitches, striking out the side in his only inning of work. That gives him eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. And he hasn’t allowed a run since his first appearance of the spring.

UP NEXT: Scott Kazmir will face the Colorado Rockies and Jeff Francis in a 1 p.m. game Saturday in Tucson. With the Rockies and Diamondbacks scheduled to move their spring bases to the Phoenix area next year, this figures to be the Angels’ final trip to Tucson.
